Denmark is a beautiful Scandinavian country with so much to offer. Like the well-known colorful Copenhagen harbors, waterfall-ridden Faroe islands, and its white beaches and chalk cliffs surrounded by turquoise waters. It’s where the capital has more bikes than cars and the country where Shakespeare got his inspiration for Hamlet. The people of Denmark are honest, open, and very straightforward. It’s where the concept of hygge was born, and to this day, hundreds of books about it are published worldwide. There’s no direct translation, but it’s all about being surrounded by loved ones, staying relaxed, finding your real meaning in life, and how that path leads to happiness.
With such a beautiful concept being the core of culture in Denmark, of course you’d want to nail it when you send gift baskets to friends, family, and colleagues in Denmark. From fresh fruit baskets to nostalgic cookie gifts and more, our catalog of gifts to this amazing country is filled with local favorites. I originally set this up for a Monday delivery. When I found out the recipient was not home that day customer service helped to change the delivery date and confirm with the delivery driver that the intended delivery needed to change. I received an email this morning from the recipient to tell me she had received the package on the agreed delivery date. All is great. Thank you for the support. 😊
Who doesn’t like receiving gifts? It’s the primary love language for many people, and we’re here to help you learn it. The following is a list of the most common holidays in Denmark. For your convenience, we’ve divided them into four sections: Public, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim.
There are plenty of exciting holiday traditions in Denmark that aren’t just tied to Christmas. For instance, people quite literally jump into the New Year off of chairs. If you don’t, it’s counted as bad luck for the entire year!
Fastelavn — is held in June, a mix between carnival and Halloween. Children dress up in costumes and hit a candy-filled barrel with a painted black cat on it. Event adults dress up in costumes and enjoy a slew of other games and food for a fun day.
Saint Martin’s Eve — held on November 10th, everyone feasts on roast goose with potatoes and gravy. Years ago, a French guy named Martin hid inside a flock of geese to avoid being anointed a bishop. Except they all flew away, and he was found. Martin’s revenge was declaring everyone should eat goose on Saint Martin’s Eve. A delicious tradition with a very interesting start to be sure!
How Are Birthdays Celebrated in Denmark?
Danish birthday parties are a fun time no matter how old you are! There are traditions for kids and adults too. For a child’s first birthday, they have an entire cake to themselves, simply to see the look of joy on their faces as they eat it. Presents are commonly placed around younger children’s beds, so they can open them immediately upon waking. This makes sending birthday gifts a day or two early a must! Celebrating birthdays for adults is a given, but turning 30, 50, and 60 each have unique traditions.
When turning 30 and if you’re still single, expect a very interesting party centered around pepper. A 30-year-old single female is called a “pepper maid,” and a single male is a “pepper man.” Or a “pebermø” and “pebersvend” in Danish respectively. It doesn’t end there. A giant pepper mill is placed in their front yard, adorned with the number 30. For 50th and 60th birthdays, they rent out a large hall, provide servers, and have a 3-course meal with professional entertainment. Or, they place an “open house” ad in their local newspaper to let everyone know their house is open on their birthday. Old friends will drop by to catch up, new faces to say hello, and a brunch or buffet is served. Birthdays are always fun in Denmark, no matter what age you celebrate.
Are There Special Rules for Sending Corporate Gifts to Denmark?
No matter where you are in the world, gift-giving etiquette is tough to perfect. When it comes to sending corporate gifts to Denmark, rest easy. First, gifts aren’t expected and not required to bring to the first meeting. But you are welcome to gift a small present if things appear to be going well, like when closing a deal. Given or received gifts are typically opened immediately in front of the gifter to express your thanks as soon as possible. Great gift options are office items with your company logo, such as paperweights, pens, or other practical things. Of course, a box of chocolates never fails to work for practically any occasion as well.
What Are the Best Romantic Gifts to Send to Denmark?
Romance is a language spoken all across the world in many ways. However, it’s a universal rule that actions speak louder than words. Sending your love a romantic gift is a great way to show how much you care for and miss them. A beautiful bouquet of flowers is always a great first choice, and the more lavish, the better. Send them a bouquet of all-red roses, sunshine lilies, or a combination of sunflowers and irises. If flowers aren’t their thing, a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine is a safe bet. It’s the ideal adult comfort present, and if you want to score bonus brownie points, include a plush teddy bear as well!
